Peter endures a long day of travel when his bus to Nicaragua breaks down and he gets ripped off on the border by cycle-rickshaw drivers.

Peter suggests avoiding the bicycle rickshaw drivers at the border because of the unfair prices they charge. Prices are relative. In Nicaragua, a reasonably priced rickshaw would be no more than $2US. The going price for a massive plate of food: $1US. Baseball game: $1US to get in and $5US for tacos and beer. Try finding that in Europe and the US. Of course, that’s why South and Central America is such a hot destination for backpackers. That, and striking landscapes and vibrant cultures.

An incredible short film supposedly compiled with scraps from the cutting room floor; I can’t imagine what the highlight reel must look like. In the town of Phang Nga in southern Thailand, an orphanage houses or employs these character-rich faces. With a definite scratchy, distorted, Tarantino effect layering its entirety, the storyteller makes a beautiful representation of his time aiding this orphanage that would intrigue even the least altruistic viewer. Whether they’re looking for the mythical creature, or the myth itself, their stories probably still revolve around the journey. Maybe a terrifying drive in the pouring rain or a pub just up the road where musicians charmed the patrons with traditional tunes. PassionRepublic took a little break from their visual production work in Malaysia to visit Taiwan, of course not breaking from work entirely as the cameras kept rolling. The dynamism of this documentation could make any skeptic of Asian travel pine for a chance to see Taiwan. Each clip of B-roll allows another glance at the multi-faceted culture of the streets and country. Dick certainly put some of these principles into practice.

With only a week to pack in as much exploration as possible there are a few principals to follow. Be light on your feet; this means renting a car and making the most of each morning, afternoon and night. Explore outlining regions and keep plans loose to accommodate last minute trip revisions.

Focus your attention; some of the best advice given to me was to not try and do and see too much. Focus on one or two towns and take day trips from there. With just a few days you don’t want to constantly on the road.

And finally, take lots of pix, footage and write constantly. Make the most of your week by focusing a dedicated effort on creating some fun media for you and your friends to enjoy.
